The NAMI Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for family members of individuals living with mental illness. The groups can meet every week but generally meet on a monthly basis. The NAMI Family Support Group model, developed in 1999, provides an environment where participants are encourage to share actively in the work of the group, gain confidence in their abilities to cope and learn how to "work the system" to help their loved ones access needed services. Support group attendees are encouraged to take care of themselves so that they can provide the best care possible to their family members. NAMI Family Support Group is currently available in 39 states.
